Camp Greentree
Camp Greentree, operated by the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA), is the DMV region’s intensive therapeutic bridge for children facing homelessness, trauma, and serious emotional challenges, providing the consistent, high-quality care that too many vulnerable youth would otherwise lose when school doors close in June. Drawing on JSSA’s year-round MindCraft school-based mental health program, Camp Greentree ensures that the most fragile children in our community continue to receive the support they need and two meals a day.
Camp Greentree also offers a chance for children who have faced instability and hardship the opportunity to experience the simple joys of childhood they might not otherwise experience. For many campers, this is the first time they will swim in a pool, share ice cream with friends, and feel the freedom and belonging of a true summer camp experience.
In a safe and nurturing environment, children are not defined by their challenges but are supported as they build confidence, form friendships, and rediscover joy.
“As a PRYDE Leader, I thought about what I want to do in life and who I want to be around. I stepped out of my comfort zone and learned to be patient.”
Too many children in our region are navigating trauma, instability, and serious emotional challenges without consistent care, especially as school-based services face cuts and families fall through widening gaps. When school ends, many of these children lose not only access to mental health support, but also safe spaces where they feel seen, supported, and connected.
At Camp Greentree, children who arrive withdrawn and overwhelmed begin to find their voice, build confidence, and form meaningful relationships. Just as importantly, they experience the simple joys of childhood.
One parent described the transformation they witnessed: “He has more confidence. His ability to talk to his peers has improved. He is able to identify his feelings and sources that may be affecting his mood.” Champions for Children funding helps sustain this critical continuum, expanding access to therapy, transportation, and basic needs so that children can heal, grow, and experience not only the care they urgently need, but the childhood they deserve.
With Champions for Children’s support, more children will have access to this life-changing care so that every child who arrives in crisis leaves with the tools, relationships, resilience, and sense of belonging they need to thrive.
Join us and be a champion for them.
